Clearwell Caves
Clearwell Caves are now a working mining museum where visitors can see impressive caverns with geological and mining displays. Iron ore from the Caves has been used over many centuries to make tools, weapons and machinery. Some forms of the iron ore occurs in powder form, red, yellow, purple and brown ochre; they are highly valued as pigments and still mined at Clearwell Caves.
Forest of Dean Heritage
From the ice age to the present day, discover the secrets and legends of one of Britain's ancient 'Royal' forests. Situated in five acres of scenic woodland, the Dean Heritage Centre tells the story of the Forest of Dean and its people. Through exhibitions, outdoor displays and a year round programme of events, explore the history of this 'hidden' country with a visit to the Heritage Centre.
Puzzle Wood
Puzzle Wood contains iron workings which date back before Roman times. The 14 acre site lies in a woodland setting and was landscaped in the 1800's. Paths are arranged to form very unusual maze. Ther is also an indoor wood puzzle and farm animals.
Cycling
There is no shortage of place to visit ob bicycle and the Cannop Cycle Centre provide an ideal starting point. The centre which was formerly the site of Cannop Colliery. As well as hiring bikes the centre also offers refreshments and toilets. It is the starting point for the Forest of Dean Family Cycle Trail which consists of twelve miles of waymarked, surfaced tracks, most of which are on former railway lines.
Two Golf Courses
The Forest of Dean Golf Club at Bells is set in the beauty of the Forest of Dean countryside with panoramic views you will love. The Forest of Dean Golf Club was founded in 1973 and is situated in the beautiful and unspoilt Area of Outstanding Beauty that is the Forest of Dean.
Forest Hills Golf Club at Colford is also within easy reach of The Orepool Inn & Motel. The course is a relatively new par 72 set in rolling farmland two miles out of Colford.
Being close to both the Wye Valley and in the heart of the Royal Forest of Dean there are numerous outlets and opportunities for Caving, Hiking, Horseriding, Fishing, Canoeing, and more.
